Line graph maker

Show how something changed. Add a second series to compare two lines, and the latest value is called out automatically.

Quick answer: Enter time points and values. Fill the second value column to make a double line graph that compares two series. Upload a CSV if your data is in a spreadsheet, then export a PNG or SVG.

How to make it

  1. Enter your time points in order (days, weeks, months) with a value each.
  2. Optional: fill the “Series B” column to compare two lines, and name both series.
  3. Turn on short numbers for large values so the axis reads 12K instead of 12,000.
  4. Pick a landscape format for LinkedIn or X, or 4:5 for Instagram, then export.

When it works, and when it doesn’t

Use it for

  • Trends over time: follower growth, revenue, weekly views.
  • Comparing two trends on the same scale.
  • Showing a turning point, such as the week a video went viral.

Pick something else for

  • Categories with no natural order: use a bar graph.
  • More than two or three lines on a phone-sized image.
  • Very few points (two or three): a VS comparison or stat card says it faster.

Same data, different story

The shape of the image changes how steep a line looks. William Cleveland showed people compare slopes most accurately when the average segment sits near 45°.

Avg. slope 30°

Close to Cleveland’s “banking to 45°”: slopes are easy to compare honestly. A 4:5 Instagram post (0.8 : 1) steepens lines; a LinkedIn image (1.9 : 1) flattens them.

Design tips

The axis may start above zero

Unlike bars, a line encodes change by position and slope, so a non-zero baseline is acceptable. ChartBeauty pads the range slightly so the line does not hug the edges.

Watch the aspect ratio

The same data looks dramatic in a tall image and flat in a wide one. The explainer below shows why and what a fair shape looks like.

Call out the end value

The number people care about is usually the latest one. It is labelled in a tag at the end of each line.

Questions

How do I add a second line?

Fill in the “Series B” column. As soon as any row has a second value, the chart draws two lines with a legend. Name them in the series fields under Words.

Does a line graph need to start at zero?

No. Bar charts must start at zero because bar length is the value. Line graphs show change, so a tighter range is fine, but say so in the subtitle if the change is small.

What is the difference between a line graph and an area chart?

An area chart is a line graph with the space under the line filled. It emphasises volume or cumulative totals; a plain line is better for comparing two series precisely.

How do I make a double line graph?

Enter both series in the same rows: the first value column is series A and the second is series B. Name the two lines under Words. Two lines on the same scale are the clearest way to compare trends on a phone-sized image.

Can I upload a CSV file?

Yes. Click “Upload CSV” and choose a file with a label column followed by one or two number columns. A header row is skipped automatically if its first cell is “label”; otherwise delete it after loading.

How many data points can I add?

Up to 12 rows, which covers a year of months. More points than that are hard to read on a phone-sized image anyway.

Can I use it for stock or crypto charts?

For a simple price-over-time line in a post, yes. For candlesticks or live prices, use a dedicated financial charting tool.
