ChartBeauty / Bar graph maker
Bar graph maker
Bars start at zero, labels sit where you can read them, and long category names flip to horizontal bars automatically.
Quick answer: Paste or type categories and values, or upload a CSV. Bars start at zero and are labelled directly, and long labels switch to horizontal bars automatically. Download a PNG or SVG.
Alt text for accessibility
Bar chart titled “Average saves per post format”. Carousels 412, Reels 268, Single image 131, Stories 54.
Start from a template
How to make it
- Enter categories and values, or paste them from a spreadsheet.
- Click “Sort largest first” unless your categories have a natural order such as months or age groups.
- Leave direction on Automatic: long labels, many bars or a tall format switch to horizontal bars, which read better on phones.
- Add units in the suffix, a source line, and export.
When it works, and when it doesn’t
Use it for
- Comparing amounts across categories: views per format, sales per product, votes per option.
- Rankings and top-10 lists.
- Any comparison where precise differences matter more than parts of a whole.
Pick something else for
- Continuous trends over many time points: a line graph shows the shape better.
- Chopping the axis so small differences look huge (see the explainer below).
- Using a different colour for every bar when colour carries no meaning.
Why bars must start at zero
Two options got 52% and 48% of votes. Move the axis baseline up and watch a small gap turn into a landslide.
Lie factor 1.0×
Edward Tufte’s lie factor is the size of the effect shown divided by the size of the effect in the data. At a zero baseline it is 1.0. Above about 1.05, the graphic is exaggerating. Bars encode value by length, so a cut-off baseline always distorts them.
Design tips
Horizontal bars for long labels
Category names like “Behind-the-scenes Reels” do not fit under a column. Horizontal bars give every label a full line and are easier to scan on a phone.
One colour, one highlight
Use a single colour for all bars and let the order do the work. If one bar is the point of the post, put it first or give it the accent.
Label the bars directly
Values printed at the end of each bar remove the need for gridlines and an axis, which is why ChartBeauty’s bar graphs have none.
Questions
What is the difference between a bar graph and a bar chart?
Nothing: the terms are used interchangeably. Some people use “bar chart” for horizontal bars and “column chart” for vertical ones. This maker does both.
Should a bar graph always start at zero?
Yes. A bar’s length is its value, so a baseline above zero exaggerates differences. Edward Tufte called the exaggeration the “lie factor”. The explainer on this page lets you see it happen.
When should I use horizontal bars?
When category names are long, when you have more than about seven categories, or when the image is taller than it is wide, as with Instagram posts and stories.
Can I make a bar graph with negative values?
This maker is built for positive quantities typical of social posts. For values that go below zero, such as profit and loss, a diverging chart made in a spreadsheet tool will be more accurate.
How do I make each bar a different colour?
Tick “One colour per bar” in the Style panel. Use it when colours match something meaningful, like brand colours of competing platforms.
